Poker blog is not some extraordinary type of media. It is usually a regular blog with specific poker-related content. It is managed by someone who plays the game or is at least interested in poker. These are regular guys – firemen, construction workers, teachers, lawyers, drivers, accountants etc. They usually do not know any smart internet technologies like HTML or JAVAscript, they do not have their own domain name or a hosting service. So is it really easy to start your own poker blog? What blogging engine should be chosen?

The blog can be built in 3 ways:

Programming the entire website by using some free or paid content management system (CMS) such as Joomla, Drupal, WordPress, Silverlight etc. Setting a blog at some free blog hosting service like Blogger.com, WordPress.com, Weblog, Bloglines, MSN Spaces etc. Creating a blog at some poker blogging communities and social networks such as Pokerweblogs.com, PokerKnave, my.Pokernews, PokerVibez etc.
The first option requires programming skills and can cost you some money as you cannot just ask your friend to do it. A Web Design Company or at least a freelance programmer is needed. That’s just unacceptable for an amateur blogger. Maybe later, when the blog is already known and the owner can afford spending a few thousand dollars on a nice website. Anyway, the main poker blogger’s focus should be on the content and not the fancy graphics.

The second option requires basic HTML knowledge and skill to be able to manage various widgets and HTML objects. There are 3 important steps that every blog owner should follow:

Create the blog; set its URL and appearance Update it constantly – think of interesting topics, write periodically Promote the blog – the number of readers should increase, more and more people should learn about the blog
Once the blog is created and updated, comes the 3rd – the most complicated – stage. The blogger is also a webmaster of the blog therefore they must take care of their readers. This is not a big issue at the poker blogging communities, as new blog posts are being automatically listed on the home page, so that the visitors could see the latest entries and read them. That’s the main advantage compared to the free blog hosting and programming options. Much more effort is needed to attract readers to these kinds of blogs.

Every blogger should decide if they want to put more effort into their blog’s content and nice features or the organic readers. If the blog does not have comments, it is not interesting. Making your own comments by pretending to be someone else will not help build the blog’s reputation. An amateur poker blogger faces a lot of challenges. Ideas to Start An Authority Blog

So you’ve finally decided what niche market you are going to penetrate. Congratulations, you just made a major decision that will start the road to financial freedom for yourself and for your family. Now that you’ve made this decision, you have some important choices to make on how you’ll be setting up your authority blog.

If you ever build this blog up over time with massive traffic and sales, you can enjoy the residual income from this for the rest of your life or you can sell it off for a few million dollars. So why am I mentioning this? The first big decision you need to make before you upload your first post is how will you brand it?

You probably shouldn’t brand the blog to yourself, because it could be hard to sell down the road. These days the trend is to brand your blog using a Cartoon Character in the form of clipart. If you visit Fotosearch and do a search for Mascot Images you’ll get plenty of good ideas. This Clipart Cartoon Character Mascot will stick in the mind of all the millions of website visitors you’ll get over the years.

You should use this Mascot everywhere, starting on the upper left of your blog page. If you give out a free ebook to people subscribing to your email list, you should also have a picture of it at the top of the free ebook you give away. And when you create an ebook later you sell to your list or convert a PLR Product, this Mascot should be displayed here as well.

Later when you send your VIP Paying Customers a Christmas Card, your Mascot should be on them. My point is an interaction between you and your customers should brand the Mascot. This builds trust and reliability in the eyes of your customers and will keep them coming back to your website.

When you setup your blog the WordPress Plugins you should start off with are the All In One SEO Plugin, ShareThis, Google Analytics For WordPress, Google XML Sitemap, Tweet This, Simple Link Cloaker and Akismet. You can always add more WP Plugins later but these will get you started.

You will also want to decide on a good WordPress Theme you like and you can build a massive blog around. Personally I use the Ultimate Blogging Theme by Carl Ocab. Then I have Vaughan Davidson from Killer Covers customize the header graphic and make some minor code changes to the blog source code so it will look like and do exactly what I need it to do. Once you have your blog setup and it works and functions like you want it to, you will need to start building it out. Provide real value on your blog to the customers that will visit which will lower your bounceback rate. Then write a bunch of articles around your niche and submit them to the major article directories. Then go out and get thousands of backlinks from a variety of different sources.

The more links you get, the more Page Rank you’ll receive which will raise the rankings of all the content on your blog which will increase your overall website traffic and sales. Spend a lot of time writing relevant, unique and quality content pointing anchor text links back to your blog.

Also go out and contact webmasters within your niche, not necessarily direct competitors, and ask them if you can write a unique article for their website or blog. This will get you even more relevant backlinks.
