The Basics of Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization is a practice that is employed to promote a website’s presence on the Internet. The main aim of search engine optimization is to get the website among the first rankings on search engine result pages for any specific keyword or group of keywords. It is an area of the Internet that has been receiving an increasing amount of attention due to the competitiveness within the industry and the possible financial rewards associated with ranking on the first page.

How Search Engine Optimization Works
The basic premise of search engine optimisation is based on submitting a website to a search engine to include it (the website) in the search engine listings. However as the competitiveness of the industry grew, search engines have become more advanced by employing algorithms through which they rank the pages on the Internet. This has led to an explosion in techniques (both legitimate and some less so) employed by individuals and companies to promote their own organizations or those of their clients.

One of the key concepts that requires understanding when thinking in terms of search engine optimization is that search engines like Google base their algorithms on business principles which means that the client comes first – those people sitting behind their computers diligently wading through the search results to find the data they are looking for. And to add a bit more of complexity to this practice, keep in mind that the world of Internet technologies is an ever expanding one. It’s an industry driven with the idea of providing users with the most accurate and current information related to their search queries. Where once search engine optimization relied on a couple of straight forward strategies, it has now developed into a science.
Algorithms in Search Engine Optimization

Whenever you read or speak about search engine optimization, you’ll probably hear about algorithms. These are ‘formulas’ that are used to determine which pages are more relevant to the user. Things taken into account include the amount of recurring words on a page and whether they have any relation to one another and whether they refer to any particular industry or subject of human interest. To make things more interesting, especially for those in the search engine optimization industry, search engines have now started to store web users’ search results to determine which pages have been visited previously with the aim of updating subsequent searches for the same terms with new pages and pages with updated content. This leads to another field of search engine optimization called article submission and blog submission, all of which aim to cater for this search engine requirement by regularly submitting updated content to those websites that act as repositories.

Search engine optimization is an area of the Internet that will keep evolving with the addition and amendments of algorithms and technologies that all aim to provide the user with a comfortable and convenient web experience. It is also a field of interest that passively promotes free and accurate information to make it as comprehensive as possible. The only question that remains is whether the techniques employed for search engine optimization will continue to rely on human ability or whether this role will be sooner or later become automated.

Basics to Search Engine Optimization

Okay… for those of you who have heard about SEO (search engine optimization / person who performs search engine optimization), but aren’t too sure about what exactly it is and have absolutely no concept of how basic SEO begins, this article may just help you.

For conducting the most basic steps of SEO, it doesn’t matter if you live in Arizona and are attempting to do Tucson SEO marketing or Phoenix marketing, there are two main focuses that an SEO must assess when determining a course of action: (a) onsite optimization – work that needs to be performed on your website that needs to be friendly to the search engines; (b) off site optimization – work performed on third party websites that benefits your website.

Basic on site optimizing is fairly straight forward and consists of: (i) creating appropriate page titles and descriptions pertaining to the content; (ii) create original content that is of high quality and usefulness to your visitors; (iii) organize content by utilizing H1 and H2 tags and anchoring relevant terms as contextual links to call attention to main pages. If you can figure out what has just been described to you, then you are pretty much set as far as beginning your on site campaign.

Now for all practical purposes, offsite optimizing is simply the accumulation of backlinks (links on other websites that lead to your website when clicked on). This is also commonly referred to as link building and consists of many, many different approaches. The easiest and safest ways to build links is done by: (i) exchanging links with websites that provide similar services, or provide comparable products; (ii) find blogs relevant to your business, and that allow you to insert a URL in the comment form (preferably dofollow blogs); (iii) write unique articles that discuss your line of business and submit them to article directories; (iv) join forums and submit links back to the main pages of your site in the signatures; and (v) submit your website URL, along with a description, to internet directories.

There it is. If you want to begin conducting minor search optimization for your business, you now know where to start. Once you get started on the basics, you will quickly begin learning how to increase your effectiveness, in regards to making your website more appealing to search engines with quality content and when building links. Plus, you will find that you can handle more tasks and do them quicker as you become more efficient.

SEO Basics: How to Choose an SEO-Friendly Domain Name

SEO Basics: How to Choose an SEO-Friendly Domain Name

When it comes to SEO, the importance of a good domain name can’t be overlooked.

Choosing the right domain name for your website can definitely help your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) campaign.  Your domain name should tell both search engines and your website’s visitors what your site is about.  There are 3 ways to go about selecting a domain name:

By Brand.  If your brand is well known (at least locally or in your general geographical area) then it’s probably OK to use your brand name as your domain name.  This works well for large companies and major corporations.  Nike, Kleenex, and Geiko would be good candidates to use their brand as their domain name.  But if you’re a new small business, it’s not a good idea to use the name of your company as your domain name unless it also describes your product or service directly.  The only way your domain name helps increase your search engine ranking is if it includes words or phrases that people would type into the search engine’s search box when searching for your product or service.  If you’re a business in Denver that sells USB drives, and the name of your company is Digital Storage, you’d want to pick a domain name like “www.denverusb.com” instead of using your company name.  Which brings us to the second way to name your domain.By Keywords.  The best domain name is one that includes words that people are going to type into the search engine’s search box when looking for your product or service.  If you’re an internet marketing firm in Denver, you might want to use “www.denverinternetmarketing.com” as your domain name.By both brand and keywords.  This is the method I used for my website.  I have an SEO company in Denver called Mile High SEO, so I named my domain “www.milehighseodenver.com.”  This contains both the brand and some major keywords (Denver SEO).

Here are a few more pointers for choosing a domain name that’s both user friendly and SEO friendly:

Make your domain name as simple and short as possible while still keeping it descriptive.  My website, “www.milehighseodenver.com,” describes my business without overdoing it.  It would be even more descriptive if I picked the domain name “www.milehighseodenversearchengineoptimizationcompany.com” but who would want to type that into the URL bar?Don’t use underscores to separate words.  The search engines can’t understand them.  In most cases, there’s no need to separate words because the search engine spiders are very good at parsing them.  If you need to separate words, use dashes.  An example of a domain name that might need to use dashes is “www.gerdensoftengrow.com.”  It’s supposed to read “gardens of Tengrow” instead of “gardens often grow,” so it would be necessary to use dashes, like so: gardens-of-tengrow.com.  Just don’t use more than one or two dashes unless you absolutely have to.Don’t restrict yourself.  When choosing a domain name, try to think of the future when possible.  If you’re a company that sells carpetBusiness Management Articles, don’t choose “denvercarpets.com” if you’re thinking about eventually adding hardwood flooring and tile to your product line.

Before-Blogging Basics : Making Money From Home the Smart Way

Are you wondering what all the hoopla is about blogging? Are you wondering if it’s worth your time and energy to start one, or more than one blog? Are you curious to know if blogging is going to be the secret weapon that helps you start making money from home? Many online business owners ask these questions, so here’s a little insight into blogging that might help you build your business.

“Blogging” is a fun word, so it must be fun, right? Well, only if you really like to write something meaningful that your readers are interested in and willing to keep reading as you make more and more blog posts. The thing is, if you want to start making money from home, you have to maintain a blog to make it effective, and keep posting valuable content on a regular basis, otherwise there is no point in having a blog.

If you hate to write, but you want a blog to get you started making money from home, then consider joining an article writing service that will provide daily content for you to post to your blog. You can also use other people’s articles as content, but the most effective blog posts for making money from home are the original pieces you create yourself that offer content people want to read about and keywords that people search for on the net – a solid “pillar” article.

No matter what your online business, you will certainly benefit and start making money from home by creating a free blog with Google’s Blogger or WordPress, and posting to it daily with fresh news, reports, articles, or opinions.

Before blogging, you also want to consider your niche market and target audience. By this I mean that you don’t want to write blog posts that are all over the place, discussing many different topics. Stay focused on your “making money from home” niche and make sure your posts are all related to your website’s content.

Related to that is knowing the whole purpose of your blog and why you are doing it. It may be that you want more traffic to your website, that you want to establish yourself as an expert in your niche, that you want to use Google’s Adsense on your blog posts to make money from home online, or that you just want to build a relationship with your customer base. Whatever the reason may be, keep focused on that reason, and keep consistency in your posts.

Earlier I mentioned Blogger and WordPress as choices for you to set up a free blog. These are the two that I know of, but there are others that you can look into if you do some research. Consider these choices carefully, as most internet marketers who are making money from home prefer the WordPress blogs for functionality and ease of use. I use Blogger and am happy with it for my purposes, as it is very basic and easy to use. WordPress offers a little more customization and advanced features.

Next you have to realize that you can’t just have a blog – You also have to promote it. This can be done in various ways like posting a link to your blog in the articles you submit or forum posts, joining a blog carnival, networking with other bloggers, submitting comments, running free or paid advertisements, press releases, or other marketing methods.

Last but not least, you should really get into a habit of tracking your blog posts, as to how much traffic it is bringing you, how much you are earning and from which clicks, and where your sales are coming from if making money from home with your blog is important to you. This is good practice for any internet marketer. If you keep these points in mind before starting a blog, you’re on your way to blog riches!

Your WordPress Website: Seo Basics

There are several things you must have in mind when creating a wordpress website. As you probably already know, wordpress is currently one of web’s strongest web development platforms, and that is due to the fact that SEO has always been on its developers minds.

/>

SEO (search engine optimization) is what allows your website to be well ranked (or not that well..) on the web. A well structured website is a must, if you want to reach the main share of your potential visitors – the ones finding you throw the search engines. How does it work? Basically, google, yahoo, etc, have what professionals call “the crawlers”, which are bots that run through your website and try to “understand it”. The way these bots read your blog is 100% dependent on the way you build it – and this is where the word “keyword” gets into this article. If your main keywords are showing up on the website’s main spots, crawlers will get the idea and improve your ranking for those keywords – on the titles, on the links, hidden behind an image, etc, any opportunity to enlighten your main keywords will be precious.

WordPress started as a blog platform, but is today used as a bit of everything. It can certainly work as a powerful and excellent CMS, for you to even manage a business out of it. To make it look the way you want, you’ll always need some coding skills, however the use of wordpress plugins can be extremely useful – you’ll find all sorts of tools, and most importantly, they are all totally free (have a quick look at wp’s plugin directory).

On this 1st post, I will be making you a few suggestions that will hopefully help you start your wordpress experience with the right foot. It will be a mixture of best practices and wordpress plugins that you should download and implement on your new toy. So here you go:

- Page titles: homepage, article and archive titles should be careful managed. They will be the 1st element to be analyzed by the search engines. Have in mind that the first words are the most important ones, and they should include the keywords of current page’s content;
- Breadcrumbs: if you’re not familiar with it, breadcrumbs is a technique used in web navigation, so that users can keep track of where exactly they are on a given website. If your template doesn’t have it, find a plugin that you can use;
- SEO Friendly Images plugin: this plugin will automatically edit the “alt” tag of your images (the equivalent to a text title to the crawlers) to the title of the article where they are located;
- Google XML Sitemaps plugin: an important tool that will create and update the XML of your website. The XML file will work same way as a feed, but to the search engines. Explore Google Webmaster Tools and let Google know about your sitemap;
- WordPress Database Backup plugin: this one, together with some other plugins, are essential security plugins to adopt. Most of them can work automatically, upon proper set-up;
- cforms plugin: this amazing tool, developed in ajax, will allow you to create top-notch forms to your website – from the simple “contact form”, to a survey or submit form.

I do hope that you can take advantage of some of these suggestions, and get on the right trail with this terrific web platform. In the meantime, I can only suggest loads of reading and researching!
